The white building most clearly shown here is the Church of Christ building, built in the 1950s and still active as of 2022. There is also a house inside the trees to the left where my Great Grandparents lived at the time this photograph was taken. After their passing, my Grandparents lived in the house and later my parents moved into the home. My Mother recently passed, so only my Dad lives there now and I live in a home just to the left of the property where I am close and can help take care of my Dad. Several tornadoes have passed close by through the years, taking many of the beautiful trees, including several fruit trees, and also the big barn. The land to the north was cleared of trees for farming and a pond was also dug for water control on the side hill. There are also other houses that have been built to the right and on the hill.

This is historical Clarks Tower, located just south of the Winterset City Park. A winding, one way drive inside the city park takes you from the park, through beautiful scenic hills of trees, stone and wooden bridges with many photo opportunities up to the tower and then back down the other side and back into the park. It has not changed much at all through the years. It is kept up very well and is a very popular tourist and photo opportunity site.

This is Blair Chapel and the Cemetery there. There were a few summers that my Church congregation used this Chapel for our Summer Bible School session. This was also part of my school bus route growing up and the house next door belonged to the Maxwell family. (The current mapping for this site is way, way off.)

This was the home of another next door neighbor when I was growing up on the St. Charles farm. After I graduated from High School, I later rented a nearby house and property with my cousin from this dear, elderly lady. Her name was Mrs. Jim Scrivner.

This was the home of our dear, next door neighbors, the grandparents of our future Governor of the Great State of Iowa, Governor Kim (Strawn) Reynolds. Her grandparents were the sweetest and best kind of neighbors to have. My parents sometimes left my smaller brothers and me in their care if they had to run to Indianola or Winterset for errands and needed someone to watch over us until their return.

My family lived here at the time this photograph was taken near St. Charles, Iowa. It has changed so much since then, it hardly resembles the same place. The last time I drove by it the barn, grain bins, and most of the smaller out buildings were gone because it is no longer a working farm. The house has been enlarged and is now a large bright blue box shape. The small tree that I planted, shown here located directly behind the house and in front of the large shop door is now a beautiful, huge shade tree. Several of the large shade trees in the front yard have evidently died and been removed. There is also no longer a working railroad line south of the house. The Chicago Northwestern track was taken out not long after this photo and this became part of a walking trail. My family lived here for over 20 years. It was a wonderful home and working farm to grow up on with 240 acres of beautiful hills, timber, a large fishing pond, fields and wonderful memories.

I believe this was the Arlis Bown and family home at the time this photo was taken in 1964.
