A little drive in with a big history. French born chef Albert Mazarelle constructed this in 1954 and opened as the Green Gables Bar-B-Q. He had been chef at numerous restaurants around the world, most recently the Elyria Country Club. The original restaurant would have been just the peaked roof main building. Within two years he had added the side dining room.

The Green Gables was no ordinary drive in. In addition to the "World's Best Bar-B-Q" Albert featured French cuisine such as French onion soup and duck livers flamed in Sherry.

By the early 1960s he had renamed it Albert's Restaurant Francais and offered full course French dinners on 3 days by reservation only. The tiny dining room could seat 22 people. He still had regular fare but never offered hot dogs and hamburgers were only for children. He delivered to the Oberlin area and much of his clientele was from the college plus businessmen and executives from Lorain and Elyria.

He passed away in 1969 and his widow sold the property to Frank Bolf in 1970 who changed the name to the Polar Freeze. In 1973 he applied for a liquor license and it became a tavern by the same name.

By the 1980s it was Mary's Tavern. I can't find how long Mary's stayed in business and cannot find any business listed after it either.

The buildings are still there with a wide front addition that shields the original buildings, but they are still there at 43961 Oberlin Elyria Rd.

This was definitely a tavern in the late 90's. I can't quite recall the name -- I think it had "moon" in the name. Maybe "Blue Moon"? Pretty sure I had a t-shirt that was dark blue with a yellow crescent moon on the side.

It was also known locally as Ray Heath's Office, he owned the Junk Yard next door. Folks gathered the parts they needed then stopped down at the bar to pay Ray.

This was my grandma's (Mary Bolf) Tavern when it was called Mary's Tavern. Well in this picture here it wasn't the bar yet at this time but at some point it was my grandma's bar my dad's Larry Bolf his mom's bar before she sold it on the large 80's to Kenny and Stacy. I just happened to find an old Mary's Tavern shirt a few months back :) sure wish I got to know my grandma Mary but she passed away 6 days before my first birthday. Everyone always talks so nice about her and always have such great stories to tell me about her.

It went from Mary's bar to Mary's Hideaway. A lot of memories there.
