I am pretty sure this is my grandmotherβs house on Church Road in Byron. I was 2 when these were taken. It was leveled in the bad tornado. We lived just to the west, but I donβt see photos of our house.
Hi Rachel! How fascinating to hear about your grandmother's house on Church Road. A tornado that leveled it must have been quite devastating. Do you have any other specific memories from that time? We'd love to hear more about growing up in Fond du Lac County. Also, did your family have any farming activities in the area?
That property was at least 80 acres of high ground that abutted the ledge, any acreage of which was not wooded was used for hay for my uncleβs farm and my oldest uncle rotated the tilled acreage and grew farm stand crops that were sold to local piggly wiggly stores in Lomira and I think Mayville. He grew peppers, tomatoes, squash, beans, pumpkins and cabbage. I remember haying with my cousins. My grandmother canned all the wild berries and taught me to identify many plants in the woods. I know she canned currents, raspberries, blackberries, Rhubarb, apples and plums. I hunted with my dad on that property until my grandmother moved to assisted living. She was 73 years old when I was born in 1975. We lived just down the road until the summer I turned 6.
