The old Willow Springs Tavern. Located at the corner of Bingaman Rd and Old Route 30 (aka Chambersburg Pike) near Spigot Valley Road. This is one of the many Taverns built after the Revolution throughout Pennsylvania along what was then called the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh Turnpike (now part of Old Route 30). At the time of the Civil War this was also known as Cashtown Pass. This tavern is of great historical significance as it is the place where on June 23, 1863 four local men, led by Henry Hahn, conspired to ambush an advancing detachment of the 14th Virginia Cavalry. Hours later they carried out their plan ultimately killing the first Confederate soldier of what would soon become the Gettysburg conflict; however, because the four men where not enlisted soldiers they were called "bushwhackers" and the killing is therefore not considered the first death of the war. This is an account worth reading about but too much to put in this comment so I have referenced a video below produced by the Adams County Pennsylvania Historical Society.
