St. Mary's Road, Hillsborough, NC
Owner in 1959: Reid and Mildred Roberts and their 5 children. Catherine, Nancy, Larry, Thomas and Steve
I was 9 years old when my Dad and Mother built this house in 1949. I lived there until I went to college in 1959. Most of the lumber that went into this house was cut from the farm in 1948. Dad with two local carpenters, Mr. Sam Woods and Mr. Sam Wilson, built the house except for the brick, plumbing and electrical. Changes: Dad added a two car garage on the right hand side facing the house from the road. There have been 3 other families that have lived there. One of the families painted the red brick white. The trees and shrubs have matured. The pond was filled with dirt. Other than that, it remains the same. Larry still has 80 of the 165 original acres Dad bought from a bank. The property was a Land Grant from England (don't remember the year or who owned it before the bank took it over in foreclosure during the Great Depression). There is also an aerial of the farm in these picture rolls.
