This is our family's farm, on land four miles east of Mediapolis, Iowa. Our great-grandfather, Alfred Holm, came over from Sweden in 1877 and homesteaded the land along a two-mile stretch of road, carving out farms for his six sons. This is the home place, where the fourth generation now lives. The barns have been razed, and storms have taken down a lot of the trees in the east and west apple orchards. This land has been home to Alfred and Sarah (Pierson) Holm; son Benjamin and Minnie (Long) Holm and their daughters Marjorie Holm Howard and Mary Louise Holm Nollen; Mary Lou and Carl Nollen (all deceased) and their children Dennis, David, Diana and Duane. Now Duane lives in the farmhouse and several years ago, David and his wife, Marsha(Heiens)Nollen, built a new house where the west barns once stood. It's a favorite gathering spot for their children and grandchildren. An area farmer works the tillable acres in corn and soybeans, and our family enjoys hunting and recreational activities on the vast yard, around the pond and in the timber.
