This farm was owned by Robert Kraft at the time of this photo. The condition of the cornfields shown in this film roll suggests the above photo was taken sometime in the late fall of 1964, shortly after this farm suffered a devastating fire. The September 19, 1964 edition of the Freeport Journal-Standard reported a barn fire in the early morning on the same date. Fire destroyed a 34x72 barn, eight calves, 7,500 bales of hay, 850 bales of straw and some farm equipment. Total loss was estimated as $28,000. The Kraft farm included barns on both sides of the road (as indicated in plat maps and illustrated in John Drury's 1955 aerial pictorial "This is Stephenson County"). It's unclear which barn burned, but a new one was built next to the stone house sometime after this photo was taken.
