I grew up on this farm that is located approximately five miles south of Lincoln, IL near historic old Route 66. In 1966, when this photo was taken, I would have been in grade school. I eagerly watched for the school bus everyday from the windows of that indoor porch. I often rode my bike down that long lane between the fields of corn, soybeans, wheat and oats. I remember playing in the wagons full of grain and taking lunch and cool drinks out to my dad and the men who came to bale hay. I remember sitting in the ditch alongside that gravel road and picking violets in the spring, or gathering big bunches of fragrant lilacs from the bush next to the driveway. My siblings and I β€œwalked” those bean fields cutting out weeds and volunteer corn. We grew some of the best-tasting sweet corn, green beans and tomatoes in our garden, and Mom canned much of the summer produce. In 4-H, my sister and I learned how to cook, bake, and sew, and we proudly entered our projects to be judged at the Logan County Fair. Back in those days, friends of our family would frequently visit and we kids played lots of outdoor games of baseball and freeze tag, and we caught lightning bugs after dark. This picture brings back so many memories of that wonderful early time period in my life. My parents built a new brick house behind the old farmhouse about ten years after this picture was taken. As the years went by, the barn and sheds were all torn down. Additional grain bins were built. Time went on and my siblings and I moved on with our own lives, but we continued to gather at the farm for the holidays and special times. After Mom passed in the early 90s, Dad continued to live and farm there until he was 89 years old and declining health would force him to move into town. From 1952 until 2015, this farm was β€œhome” to our family. Thank you for this picture and the memories I hold dear.
